Rhaean Fell is the daughter of one of the Mothers of The Order, a woman named Kyndra, who insists that her daughter must become to strongest and most capable Hand of The Order. Rhaean is trained in Fire's Hearth alongside two other recruits, Ygritte and Syrnith, both of whom possess magical abilities. Kyndra believes that Rhaean is also magical, but unlike the other two girls, she has never exemplified any magical skills, much to her mother's disappointment. And though she works as hard as she can to make her mother proud, Rhaean has no desire to even be a Hand of The Order. She would rather live a normal life.

But normalcy is not her destiny. After two years training at Fire's Hearth, Rhaean begins to hear the voices of spirits that haunt the ancient fortress. They come to her at all hours of the day and night, laughing, teasing, mocking, distracting, and tormenting her. As time goes on, it gets worse, and Rhaean is driven to desperation. Yet, no matter how hard she appeals to her mother, Kyndra Fell will not be moved.
